Chapter Ten

Petra

As Petra walked around the Rim, the chain that connected her to the woman at her side clinking softly, she smiled.

Nothing about this experience and moment made any rational sense.

If she were viewing her own life from the outside, she would not be able to fathom how a woman who had been abducted and sold as a breeder, chained to another breeder and forced to walk five miles around a space station could possibly have a reason to smile.

And yet, she did.

The area between her legs still throbbed at the memory Tonx’s presence there. Shortly after they had finished – though in truth, she had no idea how long they sat encased in the Olympian’s wings, breathing in the silence of the room – a loud knock had come at the door. Tonx had been hesitant to let Petra go with the guards, but she knew the sight of the Cephs at the Breeding Sector entryway had been the thing that forced him to let her go. Or perhaps her winged alien had thought about Ignis, trapped in the cells and feared a similar outcome for himself.

My winged alien?

Petra smiled, running a finger over her lower lip. The words were so strange, so foreign when she thought about them. But as surely as the beating of the heart in her chest was her own, so was Tonx.

They belonged to one another now, not just she to him.

“Why are you so happy?” asked the woman at her side.

Petra jumped, startled. “Sorry. I was just thinking about something.”

The woman rolled her eyes. “I can tell.”

Petra tucked a curl behind her ear, racking her brain for something to say. This was only her second trip around the Rim, and she wasn’t sure how the dissemination of information was supposed to occur.

Start with something simple, she decided.

“So, what is your name? I’m Petra. Just got here not long ago.”

The woman narrowed her green eyes at Petra. “Yeah. I know. I was on the stage with you.”

Petra drew in a sharp breath, the horrifying sight of the great horned alien mounting the woman in the middle of crowd of creatures burning in her brain. She looked the woman over but could see no signs of abuse. “You were the one who…?”

The other woman shook her auburn curls, her green eyes closing tight as if she, too, were remembering the sight of the poor woman. “No. I haven’t seen her again.”

Petra’s heart sank. She hoped the woman was okay.

“Besides,” said her walking partner, lifting her unchained arm to pull at one of the curls that twisted over her shoulder. “I’m a redhead. She was a blonde.”

Petra frowned. She distinctly remembered the woman having red hair. She asked her walking partner about it.

The woman shook her head. “I’m positive. She was a blonde. But… everything was covered in red, after a while.”

Petra’s guts twisted, her mouth filling with saliva. She wanted to vomit as the memory came back to her more clearly. She must have jumbled
